Maxi Günther wins opening race at the Lausitzring

Best of starts in home race: Competing under the aegis of the ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V., Mücke Motorsport secured a double victory at the Lausitzring. Maximilian Günther (16, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.) won the first of three Formel ADAC races at the Lausitzring, beating team-mate Marvin Dienst (17, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.). Championship leader Mikkel Jensen (19, Denmark, Neuhauser Racing) completed the podium party in third place.

“Victory in my team’s home race – what an incredible feeling,” said the reigning vice-champion Günther, pleased with his third victory of the season. After his double success during the 2013 season, Günther is now the first Formel ADAC driver to have won more than two races at the Lausitzring.

The ADAC Sports Foundation protégé laid the foundations for success on the first lap. Günther overtook pole-setter Dienst shortly after the start in a skilful manoeuvre running through Turn 1 and subsequently opened up a comfortable lead. Instead of pursuing Günther, Dienst had to focus on what was happening behind him and fend off Jensen in hot pursuit. The Neuhauser Racing driver followed Dienst for quite a few laps and put pressure on his opponent by achieving several sector best times in the second stint of the race. However, Dienst held his nerve to secure the first double victory of the season for the team from the metropolis.

“Victory in my team’s home race – what an incredible feeling,” said Maxi. “To be the most successful driver in the Formel ADAC at the Lausitzring is just reward for all the hard work done along with the team. The race went like clockwork after the less than perfect qualifying. I knew I had a chance at the start and used it straightaway. I got off the line better than Marvin, made my move going into the first corner and, from that moment on, was able to control the race from the front. Towards the end, though, I decided to nurse the tyres and secure the race win at the finish line in a controlled fashion. Now the deficit on Mikkel in the championship standings is only eleven points – that sounds much better to me than after the last race weekend.”
