Maximilian Günther moving up to contest FIA Formel 3 European championship

Successful collaboration with Mücke Motorsport

Maximilian Günther will start the new 2015 motorsport season powered by Mercedes. The winner of the Deutsche Post Speed Academy in 2014 is moving up into the FIA Formula 3 Championship this year. As in the previous two seasons, he will be racing for his former Formel ADAC team, Mücke Motorsport.

For the first time in his career, Maximilian will utilise a Mercedes-Benz engine as he makes his Formula 3 debut. In doing so, he follows the racing line set by many other young talents who also lined up with Mercedes-Benz Power at the start of their careers. Drivers including reigning Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, four-time F1 champion Sebastian Vettel and the youngest winner of a race in DTM history, Pascal Wehrlein, all achieved success with Mercedes engines during their time in Formula 3.

Maximilian: “Finally, my switch to the FIA Formula 3 Championship has been made official. I’m really pleased to be moving up into Formula 3 this year. Many current Formula 1 and DTM drivers learned their craft in Formula 3. I realise that it will be no picnic, but there is an additional factor motivating me to strive for my goal. I will go on working with Peter Mücke’s team, which is awesome. We had two successful years in the Formel ADAC and know each other very well. Now I just can’t wait for the new season to start.”

This year, Maximilian will line up running the Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 engine which was newly developed for the 2014 season. The F3 414 produces well over 200 bhp and won the FIA Formula 3 Championship and the prestigious Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix straightaway during its debut year.

In recent years, Maximilian’s team, Mücke Motorsport, have also gained an excellent reputation for their talent factory. Since its inception in 1998, Mücke Motorsport have trained six drivers who have all made the jump up into Formula 1 – Sebastian Vettel, Sergio Perez, Robert Kubica, Sebastien Buemi, Markus Winkelhock and Christian Klien.

There are currently five former Mücke drivers in the DTM where Mücke Motorsport have competed as a team for Mercedes-Benz since 2005 – Marco Wittmann, Bruno Spengler, Christian Vietoris, Maximilian Götz and Pascal Wehrlein. Wehrlein, who has also acted as reserve driver for the Silver Arrows Formula 1 team since last year, switched from Formel ADAC to the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2012, just as Maximilian is now doing. Wehrlein finished runner-up with Mücke Motorsport during his year in Formula 3.
