Maximilian Günther in ABB FIA Formula E

Maximilian Günther gets cockpit at DRAGON in ABB FIA Formula E

Maximilian Günther will compete in the ABB FIA Formula E and will be DRAGON’s regular driver from the 2018/19 season. The German will be the new team-mate of Jose-Maria Lopez and will contest his first race in the ABB FIA Formula E at the season opener in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) on 15 December.

It is a milestone in Maximilian’s career as a race driver: Maximilian makes the long-awaited move from a junior driver into a professional racing series – at the age of 21 years! Hence, he will be the youngest driver in the history of ABB FIA Formula E. After successful years in various junior single-seater categories, the German will compete as a professional racing driver with the world’s first-class racers. The ABB FIA Formula E is one of the world’s strongest racing series alongside Formula 1, not least due to the number of nine international automobile manufacturers involved.

Maximilian was already DRAGON’s test and development driver since the beginning of 2018 and attended all events of the past season. In addition, he was significantly involved in the development of the new Gen2 car Penske EV-3 of the American squad of team owner Jay Penske and completed numerous test days with the new contender.

The team was very impressed by Maximilian’s performance during the test days and not least because of the strong performance during the test in Valencia Maximilian was promoted from test to regular driver in the ABB FIA Formula E championship. The German will be at the wheel of the Penske EV-3 #6.

Maximilian Günther: ”This is a dream come true! I am very happy to compete with DRAGON in the upcoming ABB FIA Formula E season. We had a really productive and exciting development time with the new Gen2 car. The working atmosphere inside the team is fantastic and with the three-time World Touring Car Champion Jose-Maria Lopez I have a very experienced and strong team-mate, I am really looking forward to our cooperation! I want to thank my team DRAGON and especially Jay Penske for their trust and for giving me the opportunity to race in this awesome championship. I can’t wait for the season to start and I’m looking forward to it.”

Jay Penske, Team Principal DRAGON: ”I am very pleased to give Maximilian the opportunity to race in the #6 car this season. Maximilian did a tremendous job building rapport with the team and working with the entire organisation on the development of the Penske EV-3. Maximilian has shown himself to be a true competitor. I am looking forward to seeing the results of his hard work in Season 5.”
