Maximilian Günther commenced the FIA Formula E World Championship’s 10th season with a fourth-place finish at the Mexico City E-Prix, taking 12 points from the first of 16 races in 2024. The 26-year-old from Oberstdorf, Germany, who made history last year by securing the Maserati brand’s first victory in World Championship single-seater motorsport since 1957, enters Season 10 following his most successful campaign in Formula E to date.
Max placed 21st in the first practice session of the weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, but unlocked additional pace overnight by improving to second in FP2 on Saturday morning, trailing the fastest lap in the session by only 0.064 seconds. With momentum in hand, the Maserati MSG Racing driver maintained this level of performance into qualifying and progressed to the duel stages inside the top eight, setting the fastest lap in Group B. By posting a 1:13.505 run in the Quarter-Finals, Max qualified fifth but started the race from third due to a pair of grid penalties for both Jaguar drivers.
In the race, Max took advantage of his position on the second row of the grid and settled into a consistent energy-saving rhythm by holding third while remaining in the battle for the win, keeping pace with Pascal Wehrlein and Sebastien Buemi over the opening laps. A Full Course Yellow and Safety Car on lap nine, caused by Robin Frijns, briefly paused the race, and shortly after action resumed, Max activated his final use of Attack Mode but unfortunately lost track position to Nick Cassidy. Despite continuing to pressure the Jaguar driver until the chequered flag, Max was unable to overtake but finished fourth at the line to secure his best start to a Formula E season since joining the series in 2018.
Max will return to the cockpit with Maserati MSG Racing for the Diriyah E-Prix in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 26-27 January 2024 to contest the only two night races on the Season 10 calendar.
