Maximilian Günther secures double points in Monaco E-Prix
Maximilian Günther claims back-to-back top 10 finishes at double-header 2025 Monaco E-Prix
German racing driver, Maximilian Günther, secured back-to-back points finishes at the 2025 Monaco E-Prix, claiming 10th and eighth in the FIA Formula E World Championship’s first double-header event in the Principality.
For Max, who is a resident of Monaco, the weekend marked his first home race of the 2024/25 season and the 27-year-old showed potential from the outset by placing inside the top 10 in FP1, despite struggling with car balance.
With pace in hand, Max entered Qualifying for Saturday’s race with high hopes and was unfortunate to miss out on the session’s duel stages, with just 0.074 seconds spelling the difference between 10th on the grid and the chance to contend for pole position.
From the fifth row, Max had a conservative start to Race 1 but quickly fought forward after losing ground in the opening phase and used Attack Mode to work his way into the top 10.
By using an overcut strategy, Max ran as high as fourth before taking Pit Boost – a mandatory 600kW energy boost providing a 10% increase in energy – but due to a badly timed Full Course Yellow, was overcut by some competitors.
Despite this, Max worked his way back through the field and clawed his way into seventh after rejoining the race in 12th. After picking up front wing damage, he ultimately finished 10th to claim one point.
On Sunday, Max enjoyed a strong resurgence from FP3 onwards and extracted the performance from his DS PENSKE package in a wet Qualifying to make it into the duels from Group B.
By defeating Sebastien Buemi, Max moved into the Semi-Finals, started Race 2 from third, and was a prime contender for a place on the podium during the opening phase by running consistently inside the top four.
As the race progressed and the circuit continued to dry, however, Max slipped through the field and was overcut by his closest competitors with Attack Mode but took home a hard-fought eighth.
With 42 points on the board, Max holds seventh in the World Drivers’ Championship and will resume his season on 17-18 May 2025 with the double-header Tokyo E-Prix – a race he won in 2024.
Maximilian Günther, DS PENSKE Driver
“[Saturday] wasn’t an easy day for us. From the first session, we weren’t at our normal pace within the field. We tried to make progress from session to session. We were still able to hope for something from the race, but I suffered a bit with the overall balance and picked up a bit of damage avoiding an accident. That slightly compromised our final laps in terms of car efficiency and balance. We tried everything.
“[On Sunday] conditions were really tricky and we got through Qualifying well by setting the third and fourth quickest times. JEV got a better start than me, which cost me a few places. At the start of the race it was very difficult as I had no grip and had to battle massive oversteer. This meant that from there I didn’t have a chance to make progress up the leaderboard. I was fourth or fifth throughout most of the race, but things got more complicated once the track started to dry, so we had to focus above all on limiting the damage. That’s exactly what we managed to do by bringing two cars home in the points. We’ve learned a lot from this weekend, and the key point was to have turned the tide and positively addressed our situation after Saturday.”
