A challenging Jakarta E-Prix for Maximilian Günther
Maximilian Günther encounters challenging weekend in Indonesia after retiring with crash damage sustained on lap six
German racing driver, Maximilian Günther, experienced a challenging race weekend at the 2025 Jakarta E-Prix after being forced to retire from the 12th round of the 2024/25 FIA Formula E World Championship season due to damage.
After claiming his second victory of the season in Shanghai, Max arrived in Jakarta – an event he dominated in 2023 with back-to-back pole positions, podiums, and one race win – with strong momentum and led the way immediately by setting the fastest time in FP1.
Rain from Friday to Saturday drastically changed track conditions, and the addition of standing water on an already dirty track set up a dynamic environment across race day, with the circuit evolving session-by-session.
In Qualifying, Max was unfortunate to miss out on the duel stages, but by delivering a 1:09.188 run in Group B, started the Jakarta E-Prix from 12th and was in a good position to contend for a points finish.
By starting on the dirty side of the grid, however, Max lost a place in the opening phase but quickly recovered to remain within striking distance of the top 10 as the race progressed.
Unfortunately, on lap six, Max was pushed off-line by Oliver Rowland and experienced an immediate loss in traction which caused him to hit the barriers and retire with left-rear damage.
Max will resume the current Formula E season with his home race, the Berlin E-Prix, held at the Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit, on 12-13 July 2025.
Maximilian Günther, DS PENSKE Driver
“This race didn’t live up to our expectations, as we had set an excellent pace in the first free practice session. So the performance was clearly there. Unfortunately, we paid the price for a Qualifying session that was not so good, and we found ourselves quite a long way down the order. After that, the race didn’t go our way as we were forced to retire. Having said that, I know that we have the strength in depth and ability to bounce back from a tricky weekend like this. So I’m keen to prove the point very soon!”
