Maximilian Günther back in the top 10 at home in Berlin
Maximilian Günther shows promise on home ground, finishing sixth at the 2025 Berlin E-Prix
Maximilian Günther returned to the top 10 at 2025 Berlin E-Prix, with the German driver scoring points on home soil by taking a sixth place finish in the penultimate race weekend of the 2024/25 Formula E season.
Home hero, Max, born in Oberstdorf in the Bavarian Alps, went to Berlin in strong form after showing clear potential in Jakarta after entering the weekend fresh from his second victory of the season in Shanghai.
Wet weather in Berlin cast an air of unpredictability across the weekend, and heavy rain on Saturday morning led to the cancellation of FP2 alongside the duel stages of Qualifying which placed critical importance on the group stages of the session.
Max ended Qualifying as the third-fastest driver of Group B and started Race 1 from fifth. By securing a strong start, he immediately vaulted into the podium positions, passing Oliver Rowland and Jake Hughes to move into third.
The 28-year-old used an aggressive strategy to solidify his place inside the top three before taking Pit Boost on lap 19 and using his final Attack Mode activation on exit to retain third when the pit window closed.
Unfortunately, a late Safety Car deployed on lap 29 eliminated Max’s advantage, and with the field bunched up and with no Attack Modes remaining, he was shuffled back during the closing laps but held on to finish sixth.
Berlin’s rain continued into Sunday, but Max continued to show good pace by ending FP3 inside the top five. He launched his Qualifying efforts from Group A and was set for a duel appearance before the Red Flag was shown during his final run to eliminate him from the session.
Max started Race 2 from 13th due to a grid penalty, and settled into an early saving rhythm, strategically holding position from the start with the goal of building an energy advantage to use over his competitors.
He activated his first Attack Mode on lap 31 and rejoined in 18th before unleashing his pace to devastating effect, battling into the top 10. Unfortunately, Max was forced to pit with a technical issue on lap 36 and was forced to retire.
Max will resume his season on 26-27 July for the 2025 London E-Prix – the final race weekend of the 2024/25 FIA Formula E World Championship.
Maximilian Günther, DS PENSKE Driver
“Overall Saturday was a good day. We did many things right, with a strong qualifying session in the rain that put us in the top five, followed by a solid race. We also put in the maximum to ensure that we could execute our strategy and our pit stop well. The pace was certainly there, and we were running third and fourth in the closing stages. Then the Safety Car compromised part of our race. It’s disappointing, but that’s also part of motorsport. Under the circumstances, finishing sixth is a good result. I’d like to point out the great job done by the whole team, as we felt confident in all conditions.
“I’m disappointed with how Race 2 ended, but I’m taking away the positives. What we achieved as a team was high quality, and our performance level was strong: that’s something I’m pleased about. We had a clear strategy and we stuck to it. Everything was going well: we had a very good energy level, excellent pace, and two Attack Modes to use. I was just behind today’s winner, who had the same strategy. Unfortunately, a front transmission issue subsequently forced me to retire. Continuing would have been too dangerous, as everything was overheating and the brakes weren’t always responding properly. It’s a real pity, because as a driver, you always want to score as many points as possible. But I also think we learned a lot this weekend.”
